Below is an older article I wrote several years ago. Sometimes it is easy to get things out of order when planning a new garden room project. Following this simple guideline which I have used for both my own projects and client projects will help you stay on track, avoid purchases that don’t fit with the final vision, and save you money in the process. The principles still apply.
Garden Rooms For Every Style

The best garden rooms are the result of careful planning and consideration. There are really five stages to making sure that you get everything you hope for. They are
- Carve out a space
- Build your structure
- Add furniture
- Accessorize and
- Use it!
The fifth stage is often assumed but if the first 4 stages don’t address how you live and what your personal lifestyle requires, it could be underused. Don’t let that happen! You want to make sure all of your hard work is well spent.
Garden Rooms take many forms. From a limestone patio covered with a Pergola dripping with Wisteria vines to a fully constructed Conservatory built to enjoy 4 seasons in the harshest of climates, your perfect space starts with just one question. What kind of room do you envision and how will you use it?
Well, that’s really two questions but both must be answered satisfactorily before you can move forward with a plan. If you have an 8×10 foot plot of ground available-you can have an outdoor niche. Some small spaces make the most inviting places. A private potting shed can be the most rewarding way to spend much needed time for yourself. If you wish to entertain more than two to four people outside you will need more space for tables, chairs, etc.
If you have a view from inside, you will want to consider coordinating your outdoor space with what’s going on inside so that it flows. Have a space in mind?
