On the new green frontier, there are a handful of small companies working to develop organic cotton fabric, and other organic fabrics in playful prints. For those committed to going green, these fabrics are printed with non-toxic inks as well. Two of my favorite brands are Mod Pod Green and Oliveira Textiles. The prints contain motifs from nature and are a perfect fit for a garden setting.
Cotton grown without the use of pesticides or fertilizers tops the list of fabrics when it comes to product availability due to a well-organized certification process. It is certified organic if it has been grown according to standards set forth by the National Organic Standards Board and/or the Organic Foods Production Act. These are verified by state and private organizations. Benefits of organic cotton fabric include fewer chemicals in the environment, which in turn cause fewer related heath hazards and are a benefit for people with skin allergies or irritations.
Hemp is another up and comer. It is resistant to insects, making pesticides unnecessary for cultivation. Because it grows so rapidly, no fertilizers are needed. This enable sustainability and prevents land erosion too. Like linen, hemp is a breathable fabric suitable for very hot weather. It is also somewhat naturally resistant to UV light and mold, making it one of the best natural choices for outdoor use on a limited basis.
Bamboo Fabric is made from refined bamboo pulp which produces a regenerated cellulose fiber. The process of making bamboo is eco-friendly and does not require any chemicals. Like hemp, it grows rapidly, thereby making it an excellent sustainable material. It wicks away moisture, has a natural ability to breathe, and is naturally anti-microbial. It drapes beautifully and has a somewhat silky, cashmere feel to it.
