Today there are many options to choose from. You can add fresh DIY sprigs from your garden to a grapevine wreath and replace them as the garden unfolds all spring or summer. If you are looking for something that requires less attention such as a faux wreath there are many realistic looking options too. Best spring door decorations for your home will be those that are best suited to your individual home design, location, and personal preferences. In order to be happy with your selection there are some things to consider before you buy. Use this guide to find the wreath that will be perfect for your space.
Is Your Front Door Protected By A Portico Or Porch?
One of the most important things to consider is how exposed your front door wreath will be to the weather. If it is protected by a front porch or portico there are many dried floral wreaths and faux floral wreaths that will hold up well. Just be sure to check the description. If it does not specify, it never hurts to check with customer service department to confirm that it is appropriate for your area. Here are a few quality options you might consider….

For a solid wood door you have many options. If in doubt, err on the side of selecting a larger size. Sometimes sizes can be very tricky and choosing a wreath that is too small for your door is underwhelming. You want your wreath to have impact right? Scale is important and one of the biggest mistakes I see especially in decor viewable from the exterior are those that are too small and get lost in the landscape.
A glass door will require a way to hang your wreath. Be sure to check to see if there is a way to add a door hanger to the top edge. If that is not possible you can choose a lightweight design that can be secured with magnetic door hangers.
My own front door is a combination of a wood door with an inset of beveled glass. I also have a storm door. If you have a similar door this creates some limitations that you must consider before you buy. You will need to make sure that you measure the size of the inset as well as the depth available between your interior door and the storm door. I have made the mistake in the past purchasing wreaths that are both too large and too thick. Read on for some general guidelines for sizing your wreath.
What Size Wreath Is Good For Your Front Door?
A typical door measures 36″ wide. The general rule of thumb is to select a wreath that is 2/3 the width of the upper half of your door so somewhere between 24-30 inches is about right. If you have a door such as mine with a beveled glass inset I would recommend choosing a wreath that fills the space of your inset without extending into the wood surround. This will give you the largest wreath size possible for maximum impact.
What Is Your Style?
Just as there are style preferences in garden design consider the same for your door wreath. Do you like a loose and airy design such as those found in a cottage style garden or do you prefer a more formal look such as a neatly manicured boxwood hedge that forms the structure of many formal English gardens? There are many options for both of these styles but it is a good idea to thing about the style of your home and your other decor so that you add a wreath that completes the look you are going for.
What About An Outdoor Garden Gate?
This is a topic that I don’t think gets enough attention. If you try, as I have, to find wreaths that will truly stand up to the elements you will find that most wreaths that say they are suitable for outdoor usually come with a disclaimer stating that they must be placed in a protected space. Obviously, a garden gate stands alone, in all of its unprotected glory, so what to do?
A simple grapevine wreath makes a great base for a garden gate natural wreath. It can stand alone or be embellished with fresh sprigs of greenery cut from whatever you have in your landscaping. Boxwood, evergreen, ivy, and vinca vines are all great options. Wildflowers and any other perennial blooms are also nice additions but must be removed and replaced periodically to remain fresh.
Grapevine WreathMost dried floral and faux options are just not intended to hold up over time in harsh outdoor exposure. Since we prefer a natural look another great option is to create or buy a natural birdseed wreath. This is such a great way to decorate your garden gate and feed the birds!
Here are a few of my favorites.

Note that the largest birdseed wreaths are approximately 9-10 inches in diameter. You can modify the look by adding a frame around it with a simple grapevine wreath to create a larger wreath suitable for a garden gate.
