Winters in the Midwest can be brutal. This Outdoor Furniture Cover 2022 Roundup will help you learn why you need to protect your furniture, what to look for, and see some recommendations in each outdoor furniture category.
I used to drag the outdoor furniture, cushions, firepit, and patio umbrella from my deck and patio to the basement each and every fall. While I still remove the cushions and store them away for winter I am a little older and my back won’t take the challenge of moving it all back and forth each year. For a few seasons I left everything exposed to the elements. That was a big mistake. My furniture finishes dulled, the fabrics were faded, and the mold and mildew that collected on them definitely took a toll.
After those few seasons I made a promise to search and find ways to protect and preserve them. What a difference covers have made in the life of my outdoor furniture. Outdoor Furniture Covers have also made my life so much easier too! Everything can be left in place over the winter until spring weather arrives. There is no reason to move furniture out of the elements with the right winter protection.
So as we enter the fall season and our thoughts turn to preparations for all of our outside landscaping and winter prep here are the things you need to know about outdoor furniture covers. To begin, here is a link to an article I wrote a few years ago about what to look for in outdoor furniture covers. In it, I covered some of the basics to consider when you are ready to shop. It is still timely and the advice will get you started on the right foot.
And now for the latest on what is new and available on the market here is our roundup for 2022.
There are so many types and styles of garden furniture covers that it can be overwhelming so here is a breakdown of common types along with some things to look for.
Outdoor Furniture Full Set Covers for Rectangular and Round Dining Table and Chairs
This is by far the easiest way to a “one and done” solution to protecting large sets of dining tables or seating pieces. As the outdoor furnishings industry has grown so have innovative solutions for protecting your investment. Today there are many manufacturers offering whole group coverings as a way to protect multi piece styles.
This one, available from Walmart, is reasonable priced in tear proof coated 210D Oxford fabric used for tents, bags, and even shoes! It is breathable, waterproof, windproof, UV resistant, and comes in 14 sizes.
Walmart Full Set Cover for Outdoor Dining Set
I also like this one as it comes with buckles at the bottom to secure the covering to your furniture to keep it in place during wind and rain. It also comes in a wide range of sizes to fit most rectangular furniture styles.
Rectangular Outdoor Furniture Dining Set Cover
If round is the shape you are looking for this one measures 62″ x 24″ and will fit most standard sized patio tables. It is a heavyweight polyester 600D and has a great vented design that will keep your furniture protected yet breathable to allow water to evaporate and prevent mold and mildew.

Lounge sets can also be covered with one giant sized cover as well . Still, there are many styles within that category. This one is a big rectangle that can cover a U shaped lounge set along with room to next a coffee table or foot cushions. It has all of the key features: Waterproof 600D Oxford cloth, extra taping at the seams, UV protection, and comes equipped with a large air vent.
If you have an L Shaped Sectional Lounge set this one is worthy of consideration.

If you need individual chair covers, these come in packs of 2, are generously sized for standard outdoor chairs of many styles , and fold up nicely when not in use. They have all of the standard features discussed above and are a great value for the price.

Outdoor Furniture Bench Covers
Does an outdoor bench need to be covered in winter? Benches seem to be forgotten when winter rolls around but if you cover them along with your other outdoor furniture they will reward you in the spring with much less upkeep. If they are teak, you will still need to apply teak oil periodically but much less frequently. Other woods will also benefit from the protection of their finish. If they are metal your finish will last longer too. Here is our pick for the season. It has all of the features we look for, comes in several sizes to accomodate most bench sizes, and we love the two tone color and convenience of the storage folding bag too!
Outdoor Furniture Firepit Covers
Why cover your firepit? Firepits are notoriously heavy so protecting them in place over the winter months is important. Even the best powder coated finishes on firepits can be damaged with the snow, rain, and sleet that piles up over the winter months without the protection of a cover. Water can corrode and damage the surface and equipment inside. A covering also acts as a deterrent for rodents and other animal that may seek shelter in your firepit enclosure.
Just like other outdoor furniture, firepits come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Most common are rectangular and round. Here are some great options for each.
This one is breathable, water resistant, and will not crack or fade over time. Great Cappuccino too which you will appreciate if you have a view your deck or patio from the inside as I do. It becomes part of your rooms color scheme!

Outdoor Furniture Umbrella Covers
Finally we come to the topic of umbrella covers. If you have Sunbrella fabric for your umbrella it may not fade like some fabrics but there are still other considerations such as mold and mildew buildup from snow accumulation and thaw cycles that will take their toll on any fabric. I have numerous trees in my yard and the debris from leaves, dirt, and bird droppings makes covering it or storing it away for winter a necessity. If your umbrella is used over a table it may not be an option to leave it in place if you are covering the table and chairs. But if it is free standing this is a great way to cover in place. The frame also needs to be protected, especially if it is wood.
Here is a great lightweight option that fits most umbrellas 6-11 ft. high.
All of these options will help save you time and protect your investments. You will be happy when spring arrives and won’t have to skip a beat as you get out and enjoy your outdoor spaces with well cared for furnishings in place!
